Niall Carson wins Photojournalist of the Year award

Congratulations to PA photographer, Niall Carson, who has been named AIB Photojournalist of the Year 2007 by the Press Photographers Association of Ireland.

As well as scooping the top prize, Niall also came:
  • 1st in the Arts category for a picture of the Russian dance troupe Derevo at the Dublin film festival.
  • 2nd in the People category for a picture of Sinn Fein’s Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness after a press conference at the Culturlann on the Falls Road in Belfast, and
  • 3rd in the Individual Study category for a picture of Dr Ian Paisley during the run up to the March 7 Northern Ireland Assembly elections.

Delighted with the award, Niall said:

“It’s a great honour to receive such an accolade. I’m really happy the majority of pictures I submitted are from actual events rather than photocalls, but I have to say, my favourite picture is the one of Ian Paisley. A journalist asked him to make the V for victory sign, but he turned it around and I got the picture! It wasn’t used at the time of the elections as it’s a bit irreverent, but it was later used on the front cover of the Irish satirical magazine, the Phoenix.”

    PPAI president Ray McManus said:

“I join press photographers all over Ireland in celebrating the success of our colleague Niall. His portfolio epitomises what is best about our wonderful craft of visual storytelling. We salute his considerable achievement in being honoured with Ireland’s premier photo-jounalistic honour. His contribution is an example to us all and enhances further the proud role that Irish press photographers play globally.”

Niall is one of two PA photographers based in Dublin. The awards attracted 1,600 entries from 121 photographers from throughout Ireland.
